Man Admits to Knifing Brother During Argument over Text Messages

Thursday wasn’t exactly a day of brotherly love at Brentwood Apartments. Prosecutors accuse a man of stabbing his brother during an argument over text messages at the Hopkins complex.

Police found the victim on the east side of a Robinwood Lane building following the incident, Detective Raymond Laudenbach wrote in a criminal complaint filed Friday. The unnamed man said he and his brother—19-year-old Sonny Day Ozuna, of Robbinsdale—started arguing about text messages and then continued arguing about other things.

The victim said at one point Ozuna threatened to stabbed him and dared him to “say on [sic] more word,” according to the court documents. The man responded by saying, “Okay.”

At that point, Ozuna rose from the chair he was sitting in and “swung at him with a knife in his hand,” according to the court documents. The victim put up his arms to block the attack but suddenly felt pain and saw blood running down his hand. As Ozuna continued to attack, the man kicked him in the stomach several times in order to get away.

A woman who saw the attack told police she thought Ozuna was going to “sock” the victim when he rose and went toward his brother. She said she didn’t see anything more until the brother jumped up and said he was going to call the police. As the brother left, Ozuna showed her the knife and said he “just felt crazy,” she said.

Ozuna admitted to police that he cut his brother with a knife, according to court documents. His account largely echoed his brother. However, he said he told the victim to “shut your mouth,” and that the man answered, “You ain’t going to do nothing.”

Officers found the knife on an entertainment center inside the apartment.

The victim was treated at the scene by paramedics. His mother then took him to the hospital for additional treatment.

Ozuna has been charged with second-degree assault, a felony. If he’s convicted, he could be sentenced to between one year and one day and seven years in prison and/or fined $4,200 to $14,000.

He’s being held in Hennepin County jail on $50,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court Monday.
