Hopkins Man Charged With Brandishing Sword at Woman

Kelvin Bryan White is charged with making terroristic threats.

A Hopkins man has been charged with pointing a 3-foot sword at a woman during an argument last week.

Kelvin Bryan White, 51, faces a felony charge of making terroristic threats, which carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine. He is also charged with misdemeanor domestic assault, which has a maximum penalty of 90 days in jail and a $1,000 fine.

According to the criminal complaint, Hopkins police were called to White’s home on the 700 block of Seventh Avenue South on Dec. 30 after someone reported a domestic disturbance.

Officers found a woman, who told them that she and her boyfriend, White, had been arguing. During the argument, she said, White grabbed a large sword, unsheathed it and pointed it directly at her.

White and the woman were standing about 2 feet apart during the argument, and she told police she feared for her safety and stepped back, away from the 3-foot sword.

When White turned and saw his brother, he threw the sword on the roof of the house, according to the complaint.

White’s brother told police that he saw White unsheathe the sword and point it at the victim’s stomach. White admitted to police that he had “grabbed the sword in anger” and unsheathed it—but he denied pointing it at the victim.

White was released Tuesday on a $30,000 bond and was ordered to have no contact with the woman. An omnibus hearing in his case is scheduled Jan. 30 in Hennepin County District Court.

White’s Minnesota criminal record includes a 1980 conviction for second-degree assault, a 1999 conviction for illegal possession of a firearm and a 2000 conviction for obstructing the legal process.
