Hopkins Man Accused of Leading Police on Chase

Myron Lynn Williams, 36, faces a felony charge of fleeing a peace officer in a motor vehicle and a misdemeanor of fleeing an officer while not in a motor vehicle.

A Hopkins man is in jail following a chase through the east side of the city last week, Officer Erik Husevold wrote in charging documents.

Myron Lynn Williams, 36, faces a felony charge of fleeing a peace officer in a motor vehicle and a misdemeanor of fleeing an officer while not in a motor vehicle. The felony carries a penalty of up to three years and one day in prison and a $5,000 fine. The misdemeanor charge could result in up to 90 days in jail and a $1,000 fine.

The charges stem from an incident that began at about 2:15 a.m. Oct. 12 when officers saw a driver in a Ford Mustang who appeared to be smoking marijuana. Officers turned on their squad car’s emergency lights and activated the siren.

The driver immediately accelerated above the speed limit, made several abrupt turns, went through a stop sign and entered the parking lot of an apartment building, according to the charging documents.

After almost hitting a garage, the vehicle came to a stop, Husevold wrote. The driver then exited the vehicle and ran away—leaving two passengers inside the vehicle. One of the men told officers that he owned the vehicle but added that he’d allowed his friend “G.I.” to drive.

Based on earlier interactions with “G.I.,” officers knew he was referring to Williams. The passenger later identified Williams in a photo lineup and said Williams had tried to flee because he’s “a five-time felon.”

The charging documents note Williams has been convicted of:

  • Fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle (Nov. 14 2001)
  • Attempted third-degree possession of a controlled substance (June 13, 2002)
  • Fifth-degree possession of a controlled substance (Jan. 7, 2004)
  • Fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle (April 5, 2004)
  • Attempted terroristic threats (Sept. 23, 2004)
  • Fifth-degree possession of a controlled substance (July 25, 2005)
  • Criminal vehicular operation (March 29, 2006)
  • Attempted second-degree burglary (July 15, 2020)

At 11:20 a.m. that same day, officers responded to a report of a domestic disturbance at 1210 Cambridge St. (Knollwood Apartments), according to the charging documents. The building manager told police that a woman who lived in the building called to report that Williams was in her apartment.

The woman who reported Williams said she knows him and that he’d gotten out of jail several months ago. She told police that he called her four times in the early morning hours and, when she eventually picked up, told her that’d gotten into a high-speed chase, fled into the woods and needed her help leaving town.

The woman’s friend said Williams also told her he had fled police.

Williams denied driving the vehicle and said that the woman who reported him would provide an alibi—not knowing that she’d already spoken with police.

Williams is being held in the Hennepin County Detention Center with bail set at $40,000. He’s scheduled to appear in court at 2 p.m. Nov. 7.
