Hopkins Chemical Assessment Team Called to Orono Monday Night

Four police officers were treated for chemical exposure following a combative arrest in a Culver's parking lot Monday night.

From the Orono Police Department:

On Sept. 2 at 9:15 p.m., officers responded to a malepassed out inside a car at 3340 ShorelineDrive in the City of Orono.

When officers arrived they found a male locked inside his vehicle and was unresponsive. Officers made entry into the car, and the male became combative and did not want to get out of the car. Officers immediately smelled a strong chemical odor inside the vehicle.

The male was removed from the car, and the officers started feeling light headed, burning in their throats and eyes. The male and four Orono officers were taken to North Memorial Emergency Room.

Long Lake Fire Department and the Chemical Assessment Team from Hopkins Fire Department responded to the chemical threat. The area was evacuated. As of early this morning the four officers were all treated and released from North Memorial, and the male victim was still being treated for chemical exposure.

The Orono Police Department is continuing to investigate this incident.
