Elderly Man Hit At Hopkins Wendy's Parking Lot Dies

Thomas Pauley Lueders, a mechanical engineer, died a month after being hit by a vehicle in the parking lot of a Hopkins Wendy's.

An 87-year-old Edina man has died, about a month after he was hit by a car in a Hopkins Wendy's parking lot.

Thomas Pauley Lueders, a mechanical engineer fond of tango dancing and animals, died on Aug. 31, according to The Hennepin County Medical Examiner. He was struck by a sedan on July 27 while walking in the parking lot of the Blake Road Wendy's.

The car was driven by a 20-year-old man from St. Louis Park, Hopkins Police Sgt. Mike Glassberg said. No alcohol was found and the man stayed to assist Lueders.

"It’s not a hit-and-run," Glassberg said. "The case is with our city attorney for review to see if there are any charges."

Leuders was taken to Methodist Hospital, but later died from injuries sustained in the accident. Hopkins police are investigating the incident.

Leuders "was well-read, insightful, curious, provocative, and wickedly witty, and he loved to regale friends and fellow members of his beloved tango communities in both the Chicago area and, in recent years, the Twin Cities," according to his Star Tribune obituary. "He was a lover of words and a lover of all animals, especially cats."

A University of Michigan graduate, he served in the Merchant Marine during World War II before starting a career as a mechanical engineer.

He is survived by his wife, Beth; children, Ann, Peter, James, Tom, Martin and Carolyn; sisters, Nona and Barbara; ten grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sept. 8 at the Edina Chapel.
