CenterPoint Gives Hopkins $1,500 for HazMat Equipment

The Hopkins Fire Department will use the money to buy two gas monitors.

The will be getting two new pieces of hazardous materials monitoring equipment, thanks to a $1,500 Community Partnership Grant from CenterPoint Energy.

The company presented Hopkins a check at Tuesday’s council meeting. It was part of a CenterPoint program that pays for safety equipment or safety-related projects that support emergency response or the safety of residents in CenterPoint communities.

“We are pleased that our Community Partnership Grants provide financial support to cities in our service area, enabling them to address the needs in their community,” a news release quoted Joe Vortherms, division vice president of regional operations for CenterPoint Energy. “This program also allows us to work closely with the cities we serve, impacting the quality of life in our communities by making them safer places to live and work.”

Hopkins firefighters will use the new monitors in the event of chlorine gas leaks, Fire Chief Dale Specken said.

Chlorine emergencies are not unknown in Hopkins. In November, two men with a private pool maintenance company were taken to Hennepin County Medical Center after Monday at the Hopkins .
