The Annual Physical Exam! Preventative Medicine

The Healthy Woman's Lifestyle Choice

Oh! It's dreaded by many! The annual physical exam at the doctor's office, but it has to be done. I went in at 9:00am as scheduled and was done by 11:00am. The doctor listened intensely and then collaborated with me...she was an competent and an outstanding physician being very assertive.

The physical starts with getting the dreaded weight! Next they take your height then blood pressure. The Medical Technician or the Nurse Assistant then ask you several medical questions. Next the Medical Assistant ask you if you have any concerns. After the medical questioning you are instructed to undress and put on a clean smelling hospital gown! The next thing is sitting alone in the exam room, waiting for the doctor. My wait was short and the doctor was friendly and courteous, as well as smiling.

She then sat down and talked with me, looking directly in my eyes as she reviewed my medical history, then she asked about my medical concerns, if I had any. Next I was told what would happen during my exam. Of course I had my own plan for my health care! My agenda was quite important, I came full of my own ideas of what I wanted to order. I'm a pro-active patient when it comes to my health care.

Since I live a clean, uneventful life style the doctor said I was extremely unlikely to need several test that most women need. She said more women should think like you...they would have less problems!

My need was quite important and delicate in nature. I wanted to know how long can I wait or how long do I have to conceive a child! She smiles at me and said "As Soon As possible! I asked for the FSH Test, the CBC, Inhibin B Test, AMH Test and a test called the Fragile X Gene Test. She said the only test I really need is the FSH Test to get an idea of how many eggs I have remaining. She said "You can't just take this test any time. You have to come in next month on day three of your....I'll call it "Fertility Reminder." I said OK! I was excited. Then I complained that I can't find a good man to marry!

I never joked about the old saying women use to talk about when I was little about the biological clock is ticking...here I am thinking my own biological clock ticking...after my physical. Anyway, the doctor said "You look very healthy, very normal and you are not at risk of much because of your celibate lifestyle, so, we don't need to order many tests because of your inactive lifestyle being many years long.

She said otherwise, We will see you next year. You do need to get your mammogram but not as often as most women, including your paps smear test.

I thanked her, said my goodbyes and left. The physical exam wasn't so hard after all.

God Bless You! Be Healthy & Health Conscious!

Take Care! Ms. Shelly D. Thomas
