Why Jimmy?

The nomination of Jimmy Longoria for the coveted Sally Award was made by Kate Hondlik, a member of today's Mentoring Peace Through Art team who first came to the organization after hearing him speak to one of her high school classes. Her insights through the years, detailed for the committee's consideration and in her video presentation of Jimmy to the awards ceremony SRO crowd can be seen at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rIs-fgiZh20.  (The video's music was composed by Geoff Myers, another young team member.) The committee's handout to attendees included the following tribute to Jimmy:
"Longoria's unique and signature painting style is recognized for its dazzling color, contrast and multiple layers. His mural technique is passed on to youth through his organization Mentoring Peace Through Art, where youth are fully immersed in the process of deterring gang graffiti with exuberant community-based art, and classrooms are turned into mural companies, where each student is challenged to produce results. In both programs, youth are mentored in Jimmy's vision that giving back to the community is the highest form of art."
