What Did These Hopkins Landmarks Used to Be? (Part II)

Hopkins is going through some monumental changes. From apartments rising in the downtown to a growing park in the Blake Road Corridor, the character of the city is changing rapidly.

With the city undergoing so much transformation, Patch invites you to take a look back into the past and see if you can remember what some of the current landmarks used to be.

Mann’s Hopkins Cinema, Big Ten Restaurant and other businesses

  • The south side of the 1100 block of Mainstreet used to be Suburban Chevrolet. After the car dealership moved to Eden Prairie in 1994, the city bought properties on both sides of the block in order to redevelop it. Mann’s Hopkins Cinema 6 and the Big Ten restaurant opened in 1997.

Hopkins Center for the Arts

  • Suburban Chevrolet’s used car lot used to stand where the Hopkins Center for the Arts stands today. The $4.25 million center opened Nov. 9, welcoming 3,000 people to its open house.

Oaks of Mainstreet

  • Pines Trailer Court was built in shortly after World War II in what was then Minnetonka Township. Hopkins annexed the trailer court in 1966. By the 1990s, the Pines had numerous health and building code violations. Hopkins eventually bought the land for $1.1 million and asked the last residents to vacate the property in 1996, paying them $3,000 for each unit plus $1,950 in moving expenses. The Oaks of Mainstreet was completed in 1998 at a cost of $9.2 million.
