Weather Service Issues ‘Areal Flood Advisory’

The National Weather Service has issued an “areal flood advisory” for east central Minnesota, including Hopkins.

Heavy rainfall and thunderstorms continue to move through the Twin Cities, with up to an inch-and-a-half of rain expected to fall in an hour. A Richfield observer recorded .55 inches in a half an hour.

Another round of intense rain is moving toward the metro from the south and will impact the Twin Cities through 3 p.m.

Runoff from the rain will cause localized flooding, especially in construction zones and areas with poor drainage, according to the National Weather Service. There will also be minor flooding of small creeks and streams, underpasses and other low-lying spots.

The weather service warns drivers not to go around barricades set up to block water-covered roads.

The flood advisory is currently set to run through 4:30 p.m.
