Owner of New Laundromat Pleased With Decision to Locate in Hopkins

MegaWave fills an 18-month vacancy.

Lee Olson looked at about 25 locations before deciding to launch his new business in Hopkins.

“It looks like we made a good choice,” he said.

Olson opened his MegaWave Coin Laundry four days before Christmas at 9 Sixth Ave. S., at the east end of downtown Hopkins.

Olson isn’t the only one pleased about the decision.

“It’s nice finally get someone in the space,” said Mayor Gene Maxwell, one of the partners who own the building where the new business is located and the owner of the Midnight Market on the other end of the building. “It had been vacant for about 18 months.”

Olson, a resident of Golden Valley, is a commercial banker. His wife, Kim, operates a day care out of the couple’s home.

“We were looking to start another business of our own for the past several years,” he said.

The decision to go with a self-service laundry has what he views as several positive elements to it.

“Because it is self-service, there is not a need for very many employees, and the maintenance and upkeep is not high.”

MegaWave consists of 48 pieces of commercial laundry equipment—24 super-large washers and 24 high capacity dryers.

The 2,100-square-foot facility is wired for Wi-Fi and has two flat screen TVs.

“The location is outstanding because we are in close proximity to a lot of rental housing. For my wife and I, it is pretty close to our home,” Olson said.

Olson, the father of three boys, thinks he eventually would like to open more coin laundries because he’s “pleased with the amount of business we have had so far.”

“It’s still a growing industry,” he said.

MegaWave plans a grand opening for Feb. 25 and 26.

It’s open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week and has attendants on duty from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. weeknights and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Drop-off laundry service is also available.
