Sandwich 363 Service Project - 5th and 6th graders at Eisenhower Elementary & XinXing Academy

200 5th and 6th grade students from Eisenhower Elementary and XinXing Academy participated in a service project that made 800 sandwiches for the homeless.

On Monday morning, fifth and sixth-grade students gathered in Eisenhower's cafeteria to make sandwiches for the 363 Days Food Program, which distributes them to people living on the street. The 200 students arrived in the cafeteria in shifts, and in 90 minutes they made enough to feed more than 750 people.

Sixth-grade Eisenhower teacher, Betsy Julien, reached out to 363 Days Food Program and organized the volunteer effort. After students raised nearly $1000 during their penny war, the school donated the money to three charities, the sandwich program being one. This is the second year Eisenhower has participated in the program.

The 363 Days Food Program was founded by Allan Law in 1999 and currently he distributes an average of 1600 sandwiches per night. Steve Aase, another main contributor to the program, gave a short speech to each group of students about the significance of their work. "Your sandwiches will be eaten tonight by people who have nothing," he told the students. "This is a huge help to us and to them."

The idea behind the name of the program is based on the fact that many other organizations offer meals for those in need on Thanksgiving and Christmas. This program proudly takes care of the other 363 days of the year. The 363 Days Food Program is a part of the Minneapolis Recreation Development, Inc. For more information visit: www.mrdinc.com.
