Deephaven Elementary Selected as National Blue Ribbon School

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan announced that Deephaven Elementary is one of 286 schools in the country to be selected as a 2013 National Blue Ribbon School, based on their overall academic excellence.

Deephaven students had some of the highest MCA math, science and reading test scores in the state in 2012:

  • 96.2% proficiency in math
  • 96.0% proficiency in science
  • 85.1% proficiency in reading

“We are thrilled to be recognized with the highest national honor a school can receive," said Deephaven Principal Bryan McGinley.  "It takes talented teachers and staff, involved parents, dedicated students and strong support from the district office to make a great school.  Everyone needs to come together and demonstrate excellence on a day to day basis in their role to make this honor possible.  Educators want what is best for children and this award helps to validate that we are doing great things for students in Minnetonka Schools.”

“Excellence in education matters and we should honor the schools that are leading the way to prepare students for success in college and careers,” said Secretary Duncan. “National Blue Ribbon schools represent examples of educational excellence, and their work reflects the belief that every child in America deserves a world-class education.”
Deephaven Elementary has a diverse socio-economic attendance area within the Minnetonka School District, with 13 percent of Deephaven students qualifying for free and reduced lunch rates. The Deephaven staff and community support all of its students in overcoming barriers to learning and inspiring success for all students.

Staff, students and parents work together at Deephaven to create partnerships for learning. Staff has increased student achievement by:
  • Differentiating instructional strategies in math, reading and writing
  • K-5 coordination of science instruction
  • Creating supporting relationships through the use of C.A.R.E.S., with a special emphasis on kindness
  • Improving information literacy and technology proficiencies
Principal McGinley and Reading Specialist Kathy Fox will accept the award at a recognition ceremony in Washington, D.C. on November 18-19. In its 31-year history, the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program rarely recognizes a school twice, but Deephaven was also selected as a National Blue Ribbon school in 1991.
