Culture Exposure

Hopkins-based photographer is happy with the opportunity the State Fair offers to show his art.

“My grandfather gave me a camera when I was 12,” said Tim Koering, local photographer and entrant into the Minnesota State Fair Fine Arts Show. Koering enjoyed photography until his early adult years, but when film became prohibitively expensive, he put his camera down for the next 10 years. When digital cameras came on to the mass market, Koering thought he’d take another shot.

“I decided to buy a cheapo digital, fell in love with photography again, and I’ve been doing it ever since,” Koering said.

Koering’s hobby is covering local cultural events, snapping pictures at events like the Aztec Dance Festival, where he took the picture he ultimately entered into the State Fair Fine Arts show.

Unfortunately, Koering didn’t bring home a ribbon this year, but he plans to enter again on a regular basis.

“I was out there yesterday to look at all the other pieces and it’s fantastic to be showing. You know how many people walk through there,” Koering remarked. “It’s nice that that many people are going to be exposed to it.”

More of Tim Koering's work can be found at his online gallery.
