Calder Quartet Coming to Hopkins Arts Center

Inspired by the innovative and hardworking artist Alexander Calder, the Calder Quartet strives to balance their programs by connecting string quartet masterworks with those by contemporary composers, emerging musicians and performers across genres.  They bring their elegant and adventurous style to Hopkins, MN on February 23 with a planned repertoire of works by contemporary composer Andrew Norman, Maurice Ravel and Bela Bartok.

The Los Angeles-based quartet is comprised of Ben Jacobson (first violin), Andrew Bulbrook (second violin), Jonathan Moerschel (viola) and Eric Byers (cello) – described as dynamic and wickedly talented by Hollywood Weekly.  They are artists in resident at LA’s Colburn Conservatory of Music and have also been artists in resident at the Juilliard School of Music. Critics have recognized them as one of the most exciting young quartets to emerge in our century.

In addition to challenging concert audiences to think about works in new ways, the Quartet’s goal with each engagement is to reach out through community and educational outreach, with a focus on developing young musicians and audiences. Towards this end the Calder Quartet will hold a master class for students of the Mainstreet School of Performing Arts (Hopkins, MN) on February 22. 

Funding is provided in part by the Minnesota State Arts Board, through an appropriation by the Minnesota State Legislature from the Minnesota arts and cultural heritage fund.

This event is part of a concert series featuring national and regional touring artists presented by the Hopkins Center for the Arts. The Hopkins Center for the Arts welcomed over 210,000 visitors last year and is a focal point for arts, education, and entertainment in the center of downtown Hopkins.  The Arts Center builds community through the arts by fostering creative expression and providing artistic and educational opportunities for people of all ages.
