Forbes Names Hopkins One of 'America's Friendliest Towns'

The magazine noted the community's numerous festivals and low crime rate.

Hopkins is one of the country’s friendliest towns, according to a Forbes list released Wednesday.

The community placed 13th on the national magazine’s “America's Friendliest Towns” rankings.

Hopkins was selected from among 500 small metro communities with populations between 5,500 and 150,000. Forbes first rated towns according to how low their crime rates are and how high the percentages of owner-occupied homes and college graduates are. Partner Nextdoor.com, a San Francisco, Calif.-based social network for neighborhoods, then surveyed its membership in the highest-ranking cities to finalize the top 15.

Forbes praised Hopkins for its historic character, low crime rate and wide array of town events, such as Mainstreet Days and the Raspberry Festival that caused it to make the list despite low home ownership.

The magazine noted several commonalities among the top-ranking towns that Hopkins residents will recognize in their own community. Most have large amounts of public space, like the regional trails that crisscross Hopkins or the numerous parks. Most also have a central downtown like Hopkins has.
