State Senate, 5th District Races Highlight Local Primary Contests
Two Republicans are vying to take on incumbent Ron Latz in November, while Keith Ellison has two Democratic challengers.
There are no Hopkins city races this election season (they take place in odd years), but all three legislators who represent the city are up this year.
One of those seats—Senate District 46—will have a primary Tuesday, as Republicans Roger Champagne and Paul Scofield compete for the opportunity to take on Democratic incumbent Sen. Ron Latz in November.
Scofield has said that he is actually supporting Champagne and would have pulled out of the race had he not missed the deadline to do so. Local Republicans are urging party members to get behind Champagne.
Hopkins residents will also be able to vote in primaries for U.S. Senator, as well as for a Fifth District Congressman.
The congressional primary features incumbent aRep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) as well as Gregg Iverson and Gary Boisclair. Boisclair has made waves by running as a Democrat but with a traditionally conservative platform. He has aired ads featuring graphic anti-abortion and anti-Islam messages and images.
