Three Hopkins Ski Teams Headed to State

The girls and boys Nordic ski teams and the boys alpine ski team will compete in championships this week.

Hopkins has no shortage of skiers getting ready for this week’s state championships.

Both the girls and boys Nordic ski teams qualified for the state meet by winning sectional meets Wednesday, and the boys alpine ski team qualified for state Thursday at sectionals. 

The boys Nordic ski team tallied 382 points to runner-up Minneapolis Southwest’s 364 points in the Section 6 meet at . placed first overall in the meet, while junior Jakob Ellingson placed third and senior Jordan Taylor came in fifth.

Hopkins girls edged out Minneapolis Southwest in the Section 5 meet—collecting the same number of points as the runner-up but finishing with a faster average time. Junior Sarah Benton, , led the way for the team with a second-place finish overall in the meet. Senior Julia Lavanger and freshman Siena Ellingson followed Benton with fourth- and fifth-place finishes, respectively.

The Hopkins boys alpine ski team earned a berth in their state meet with a second-place finish in the Section 5 races at Afton Alps. The Royals’ 351 points were just 11 points behind section champion Minnetonka’s total. Brett Bremer placed first overall, while Grant Bremer followed him with an eighth-place finish.

The girls alpine ski team, which did not qualify for state, placed 10th in sectionals. Lara Rubinyi led the way for the team, placing 43rd.

The boys alpine skiing state championships take place Wednesday at Giants Ridge in Biwabik. The team and individual competitions are combined into a single event. The first runs begin at 10 a.m., and the second runs start at 1 p.m.

The Nordic skiing state championships take place Thursday at Giants ridge. The boys 5K freestyle race starts at 10 a.m., followed by the girls 5K freestyle race at 11 a.m. The boys 5K classical race begins at 1:30 p.m., and the girls 5K classical race starts at 2:30 p.m.
