MAP: Hopkins Names Artstreet Winners

More than 100 ballots have been counted, and Hopkins has the picks for this year’s best Artstreet pieces.

At a presentation during Tuesday night’s council meeting, the city announced the following winners:

• People’s Choice winner: “Balancing Orbits” by Marie Schrobilgen, of St. Paul
• Children’s Choice winner: "Picking Tulips" by Cynthia Markle, of Lakeville

The works were among four new pieces brought to the city and voted on in 2012. In addition, two Minneapolis College of Art and Design students had sculptures installed last month.

Downtown visitors can also still see the 2011 winners—Kyle Fokken’s “Shoo-Shoe Train,” which won children’s choice, and Richards Poey’s “Like A Tree, Rooted in the Earth,” which won people’s choice.

Artstreet is a collaboration between the city, the Hopkins Business & Civic Association and the Friends of the Hopkins Center for the Arts. The idea was sparked by a $10,000 Metropolitan Regional Arts Council grant. Hopkins solicited submissions, and judges selected five pieces for installation along Mainstreet in ArtStreet’s inaugural 2011 year.
