How About a Brewpub in Hopkins?

They currently aren't allowed in the community, but inquiries have prompted the City Council to discuss whether to change that.

Hopkins officials will soon begin exploring whether the city ordinances should allow brewpubs in the community.

City Planner Nancy Anderson said the discussion is just a “pre-emptive” one and that Hopkins hasn’t received any formal requests to open a brewpub here, although a memo for Tuesday’s work session said there have been inquiries about the possibility of brewpub licenses.

Existing city ordinance allow for eight types of liquor licenses—but none of them are brewpub or taproom licenses. In order to have a brewpub, the city would need to change the liquor ordinances and fee schedule.

Brewpubs would also not be allowed because they do not serve food, which is included in the zoning ordinances’ definition of a bar or tavern. If the city did allow a brewpub, the council would have to decide which zones they should be allowed in.

City staff recommend that brewpubs be allowed in the B-2 zone, which is the downtown area between Eighth and 11th Avenues and from First Street North to First Street South.
