A Golden Valley man has been charged with possession of crack cocaine after Hopkins police stopped him for driving with a broken taillight.

Marshall Borom, 57, is charged with fifth-degree drug possession, a felony with a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine. The charge has a mandatory minimum penalty of a $3,000 fine.

Hopkins police were on patrol near Lake Street Northeast and Blake Road North just before 8 p.m. Nov. 20 when they spotted a car with a broken taillight, according to the criminal complaint, signed by Hopkins Police Sgt. Michael Glassberg.

Officers stopped the car and identified the driver as Borom. They spotted what appeared to be a crack pipe in Borom’s shirt pocket and asked him to step out of the car, according to the court documents.

Police asked Borom if he had cocaine in the car, and he said he did. Officers found a rock of suspected crack cocaine near the car’s gearshift. The substance tested positive for cocaine and weighed about .3 grams.

Borom has been released from custody on a $3,000 bond. His next court hearing is scheduled Dec. 10 in Hennepin County District Court.
