Hopkins Man Charged with Sexually Assaulting Edina Woman
Police say Todd Steven Wehner, registered in Texas as a sex offender, beat the woman and then sexually assaulted her on Thanksgiving night.
A registered sex offender who lives in Hopkins has been charged with sexually assaulting an Edina woman then throwing her out of the house partially nude.
Todd Steven Wehner, also known as Todd Wayner, 49, is charged with third-degree criminal sexual conduct, a felony with a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison and a $30,000 fine.
Edina police were called just after 10 p.m. Nov. 22 to investigate a domestic assault, according to the criminal complaint, signed by Edina Police Sgt. Brian Tholen.
They found the victim near Wehner’s Hopkins home, crying and with a number of injuries, according to the court documents. The woman told officers that she and Wehner, whom she described as her boyfriend, had been drinking earlier in the evening and started arguing.
The argument escalated, and Wehner punched the victim several times, she told police. Hopkins police responded and separated the two, and the victim said she took a cab home only to find Wehner waiting there for her.
Wehner was extremely angry and punched the victim in the head several more times, she told police. He grabbed her by the hair and threw her out the front door, at which point she went next door, she said.
The woman returned home 20 minutes later, and Wehner ordered her to go to bed, according to the victim’s account. As she was walking down the hallway, he came up behind her and forced his hands down the front of her pants, the according to the court documents.
The victim pushed Wehner away, telling him to stop, but he pushed her to the floor, hit her several times in the head and pulled her hair, the complaint charges. He covered her mouth so she couldn’t scream and punched her in the ribs, then pulled off her pants and underwear and sexually assaulted her, the victim told police.
Wehner eventually let her stand up, flung her pants and underwear at her and threw her out of the house, according to the complaint. The victim called 911 and was taken to a hospital for a sexual assault exam.
A neighbor told police that she could hear screaming coming from the victim’s house that evening.
Police arrested Wehner shortly after they heard the victim’s account of the incident. Wehner was convicted in Ohio of indecency with a child and is registered as a sex offender in Texas.
Wehner remains in the Hennepin County Jail on a $100,000 bond. An omnibus hearing in his case is scheduled Dec. 14 in Hennepin County District Court.
