Hopkins Man Charged with Driving Stolen Car in Minneapolis

A Hopkins man has been accused of driving a stolen car through north Minneapolis.

Police say Tarey Marquan Hill, also known as Tarey Marquan Hamilton-Hill and Tarey Marquan Hamilton, 18, was arrested Nov. 15 in the area of Seventh Street and Seventh Avenue North, driving a Toyota Camry that had been reported stolen from a St. Paul driveway a day earlier.

A Minneapolis police officer on routine patrol spotted the Camry weaving between lanes of traffic and speeding just before 1:30 a.m., according to the criminal complaint, signed by Minneapolis Police Sgt. Michael Keefe.

The officer checked the Camry’s license plate number and discovered that it had been reported stolen. He stopped the driver and identified him as Hill.

Hill told the officer that the car belonged to his sister, then changed his story and said it was his cousin’s car, according to the complaint.

After his arrest, Hill said he got the Camry from a woman named Ericka. He said he had just met her and didn’t know anything else about her besides her name, the complaint says.

Hill, who is facing an unrelated felony charge of second-degree burglary in Hennepin County, is charged with receiving stolen property, a felony with a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

He remains in the Hennepin County Jail on a $20,000 bond. An omnibus hearing in his latest case is scheduled Dec. 4 in Hennepin County District Court.
