FULL VIDEO: Ellison, Fields Debate at Minnesota State Fair

Before a cheering and booing audience, the candidates made the case for why they should represent Minnesota's 5th District.

Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) and his Republican challenger Chris Fields come from different parties, but there’s at least one thing they agree on: Voters have a clear choice in the race to represent Minnesota’s 5th District.

“It looks like a contest between two men. But it really is a contest between two different ways of viewing the world,” Ellison told Patch after Wednesday’s Minnesota Public Radio debate at the State Fair.

Fields pressed Ellison on what he called “failed policies” during a free-ranging debate that covered issues such as tax policy, job creation, healthcare and even favorite economists. He argued that the incumbent wanted to expand government and raise taxes and hadn’t adequately looked out for North Minneapolis, minorities and veterans.

“I wanted to discuss the issues and the contrast with my opponent,” Fields said after the debate. “I like this better. I like an open, fair discussion.”

Ellison defended his record—pointing to initiatives he’d helped launch, including several in North Minneapolis, and what he said were the Republicans’ own failed policies from the Bush era.

“This is nothing new,” Ellison said afterward. “Actually, I prefer this, because in races in the past, they’ve attacked me for my religion. At least he hasn’t done that. At least we’re actually arguing over the issues that are there.”
